A slow summer evening in Joensuu: a small BBQ on a rocky lake beach, grilled food, and a Finnish white-night sunset that lasts for hours.
Not every trip is about the big landmarks. Some of our favourite memories are the slow evenings — and this was one of them. We drove out to a quiet, rocky beach on Pyhäselkä near Joensuu, lit a little BBQ on the stones, and let a Finnish summer evening unfold at its own unhurried pace.
A simple grill balanced on the beach rocks, the first flames catching as the sun dipped toward the water. We grilled marinated vegetables and let the smoke drift out over the lake.
This far north in midsummer, the sun takes its time. What would be a fleeting sunset elsewhere becomes hours of soft golden and pastel light — the white nights. We ate, we talked, and the lake turned to glass, mirroring a sky that shifted from gold to rose to pale blue.
No crowds, no rush. Just the water, the fire, and the quiet. If you ever get the chance to spend a summer evening by a Finnish lake, take it.

Travel tips
- Come in June–July: the golden hour can run from ~9 pm well past 11 pm
- Only grill at designated spots and never light fires during a metsäpalovaroitus (wildfire warning)
- Bring a blanket, a warm layer for later, and a bin bag — take all rubbish home. Watch for mosquitoes by the water
